Our Membership is Growing! Leading to Greater Opportunities to Connect!

by Berri Wells
“Substantial growth” is an understatement to describe the increase our chapter has experienced with its 2016 Membership. Rising to over 170 members, this number surpasses last year’s membership mark by approximately 64%. Contributing to this success is the increased outreach, spectacular programs / educational series, and greater awareness of the benefits of the ICF MD Chapter.
Additionally, our renewal personal connection efforts paid off, thanks to the Board and Membership Committee members who made outreach phone calls to coaches who had not yet renewed their membership. Our collective efforts were successful in elevating our Chapter’s renewal rate to 80% in comparison to the ICF Global renewal rate of 71%. Between phone calls and emails, we contacted just about everyone who had not yet renewed.
Now that we are current and up to date with regard to membership, we want to welcome new members (those who have joined over the past year) to our Chapter. We are hosting two “Meet and Greets” next month – one virtual and one in-person. Everyone is invited to come and meet our President Irvine Nugent and the other Board Members at the events. The virtual event will take place on July 11 from 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm via zoom. The in-person “Meet and Greet” will occur at our bi-monthly social on July 28. The social will be held at La Palapa Grill and Cantina in Ellicott City, starting at 6:00 pm. Check out our website calendar for further details.
Setting and Maintaining Boundaries with Others
Presentation Highlights from ICF MD Baltimore Regional Group
By Rayna Schroeder, PCC
On June 9th, Mark Sachs, Organizational Development Consultant and Executive Coach for 20 years, shared ideas on the topic of Setting and Maintaining Boundaries with Others with the ICF MD Baltimore Regional Group.* Mark began by asking the group, “What is a boundary?” Responses were “a line not to be crossed” and “a limit; something that separates what is acceptable from what is not.”
Mark shared that earlier in his career, a senior lawyer in his organization called him into her office one day and she cursed at him about his performance. After leaving her office, Mark realized he wanted to have a conversation with her about the incident. He also realized that he needed to calm down before speaking with her. He asked for a meeting the next day with this “high control” attorney and simply said, “I have no problem talking to you about my performance, but I won’t accept cursing from you.” The woman changed her behavior with him and they had no more similar incidents.
“Some things that get in the way of setting boundaries with others are our fears. Fears can include a fear of disapproval, fear of embarrassment, and fear of repercussions,” Mark shared. It’s important that we explore those fears so we manage them and challenge our assumptions. Our assumptions often get in the way of us taking action. We often build up the process of setting a boundary and imagine the other person’s response as explosive. In most cases, however, the other person’s response to our request can be as simple as “Okay” – just as it was with the senior attorney who cursed at Mark.
In setting a boundary, there are several things to keep in mind:
- Be calm. Don’t have the conversation when you’re emotional. Take the time to plan what you want to say and do so when you’re in a calm, centered state so that you will be able to articulate what you want.
- Explain the reason for the boundary. A typical feedback formula is, “When you _______, the impact is ______. I would prefer in the future that you ______.”
- If you set a boundary and people cross it or violate it, then you need to set a consequence. However, it is important that you consider the effect of the consequence before you put it into action.
One of the many benefits of setting boundaries with others is that it builds up our courage. When we are willing to stand up for ourselves and ask to be treated with respect, it empowers us. That feeling of empowerment and confidence enables us to then set another boundary and then another in an upward spiral that makes us happier.

* The ICF MD Baltimore Regional Group meets quarterly in the home of Barbara Thursz in Towson, MD to share ideas and network among coaches in the Baltimore area. The next meeting will be held on September 15 from 10-12 AM. Additional information can be found on our website.

Celebrating International Coaching Week: A Glimpse of Our Members’ Pro-Bono Work

by Barbara Thursz, PCC, and Sharon Keys Seal, PCC
As part of the ICF Maryland’s celebration of International Coaching Week in May, we turned the spotlight on pro-bono work that a handful of our chapter members do in our community and beyond. Here is a recap that reflects just a glimpse of the remarkable talent and energy that our members give to make our world a better place. The breadth and depth of these efforts is outstanding. Thanks to everyone who responded to our call for examples of pro-bono work you do. Read and be inspired! And, be sure to follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn, to stay in touch with all the great things happening in ICF Maryland!
Susan Hahn, PCC, Founding President of ICF MD, has been coaching teens and young adults in a pro-bono capacity for over 15 years. She uses the Strengths Development Inventory to discover motivational values that drive how they deploy their strengths when things are going well and when faced with conflict. One of her greatest joys is to watch young clients learn, test out new behaviors, and move forward with confidence.
Merle Rockwell, PCC, BCC offers pro-bono coaching to Leadership Annapolis connected with the Public School System. Young participants design projects that involve and benefit the community and the participants immerse themselves in the project that they created. Projects have included developing video (translated into five languages) that explain the school to immigrant parents.
Wanda Campbell, Ph.D., ACC, SHRM-SCP, Newsletter Editor for ICF Maryland, has worked for over three years with So Others Might Eat (SOME), a non-profit that provides poor and homeless Washingtonians with access to affordable housing, job training, and health care. She provides pro-bono coaching services and training to all levels of management within SOME. Earlier this year, Wanda also began providing pro-bono coaching for the Easter Seals.
Joy Goldman, PCC and Ed Modell, MCC, are contributing their talents to support Coach Activism, a pro-bono coaching initiative to support front-line refuge workers helping Syrian refugees in Greece. Ed will present two webinars on ethics. Joy is developing a webinar on setting boundaries, compassion without rescuing, and self-care for the volunteer coaches, all of whom are from Greece and Vancouver.
As part of Patricia Millar, PhD, PCC’s pro-bono work, she has designed a life coaching program for the Officer Women Leadership Symposium (OWLS). This year, five coaches provided life coaching to 25 military women at every level of leadership and from every branch of service. They’ve been invited back for next year to do again!
Karen Jacobs, ACC, Chair of the Communication Committee for ICF Maryland, provides pro-bono coaching services to members of the executive leadership team of Meals on Wheels. This non-profit organization provides nutritious meals to home-bound clients in the Central Maryland region. She is also doing pro-bono work with an entrepreneur woman who is giving back to the community of seniors and their care.
For the past three years, Marge Everett, SSC Coaching, has been offering pro-bono coaching services to Millennials through Grad Life Choices (gradlifechoices.com) and Loyola University’s Sellinger School of Business Leadership Essentials program. Her goal is to raise awareness of their personal strengths and talents, identify best-fit careers and create action plans, which ultimately enables them to be their personal best!
