I would like to express my appreciation to Donna Jones Daley who preceded me.  One of the most visible of her many contributions was her work with a team of talented Maryland coaches who combined their efforts to make our 10-Year Anniversary Celebration a wonderful success. I want to announce our new president-elect, Angie Dabbs, who recently won a Chapter Leadership Award during our 10th Anniversary Celebration. Angie’s contributions to our members, chapter, and the community are many, and we are excited she has accepted this position. More about Angie and other appointments in the chapter can be found in the article, "Exciting things are happening on the ICF-MD Board!

Exciting things are happening on the ICF-MD Board!

As we recently announced, we are excited that Wanda Campbell is our 2021 President, and she looks forward to getting to know all of our members even better in the coming months. We are also very pleased to announce three additional, exciting happenings on the Board!

Angie Dabbs, PCCAngie Dabbs, PCC, President-Elect

After serving as ICF-MD’s Director of Community Outreach during the past two years, Angie is thrilled to continue serving our community as she transitions to the President-Elect's role. In addition to her work with ICF-MD, Angie is an energetic, highly motivated organization development professional with extensive coaching, facilitation, consulting, curriculum development, and training experience. Having worked in this space for more than 20 years, she is passionate about engaging in conversations worth having that invite positive shifts for individuals, teams, and organizations. She also enjoys teaching at the Maryland University of Integrative Health. Well-being is important to Angie, and she nurtures that well-being by spending time with her husband and four children, engaging in meaningful conversations, being outdoors, and traveling.

Bob Clemens, ACCBob Clemens, ACC, Director of Community Outreach

After serving as ICF-MD’s Deputy Director of Community Outreach over the past year, Bob is excited to take on the role of Director of Community Outreach.

For almost four decades, Bob worked in senior sales management roles in the high technology space. He is experienced in mapping the corporate political landscape, identifying market competitors' core competencies, and validating assumptions in the sales process. He understands and recognizes the need for transitions after major events such as acquisition, re-organizations, and lay-offs. Bob spent years perfecting how to establish a steps-to-close plan, conduct contract, and price negotiations successfully, and meet and exceed sales goals. He has also honed his skills in reducing anxiety around presentations, engaging in effective conversations, and managing up within an organization.

Three years ago, Bob became an executive coach to guide clients toward the best version of themselves, both professionally and personally. He works directly with individual contributors, mid-level management, and senior executives to close the gap between what's happening now and what needs to happen to achieve future success.

Lindsey CarterLindsay Carter, Director Professional Development

Lindsey has been an ICF-MD member since 2018 and has served on the Professional Development Committee for almost two years. Her background includes over 20 years of human resources experience, with expertise in coaching and advising leaders through complex employee relations challenges. Lindsey’s passion for promoting individual and organizational well-being led her to become a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach. In addition to guiding others in creating lasting healthy lifestyle changes in various wellness settings, she is an adjunct faculty member at Maryland University of Integrative Health.

Why Maryland Chapter Members Should Consider Government Coaching

"Coaching is a critical tool as the Federal Government strives to develop a workforce that supports the effective and efficient mission achievement and improved services to the American people. The benefits of coaching individuals and teams include higher engagement, retention, organizational performance and productivity; increased focus on mission and organizational objectives; improved creativity, learning, and knowledge; and better relationships between people and departments." (Coaching in the Federal Government, September 10, 2018, memo from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management)

In 2018, I was hired to create a coaching culture at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). I had 13 managers trained as coaches through two ICF-certified programs. In 2020, the thirteen coaches provided nearly 275 hours of coaching to over 70 USPTO employees. The program has now expanded to over 30 coaches giving coaching to the 13,000+ USPTO employees.

To sell my program to the USPTO senior management, I gave three benefits of coaching for public agencies:

  1. Improve employee engagement.
  2. Create a more attractive employee brand and employee experience at the USPTO.
  3. Increase the servant leadership abilities of managers and supervisors.


State and local governments are also seeking the same benefits from coaching. According to a recent national poll of state and local employees by the Center for State and Local Government Excellence, "the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis are taking a heavy toll on the public workforce. Since the early days of the pandemic, negative job sentiment is climbing, while 54 percent of the public workforce say they have been negatively impacted financially by the pandemic." Coaching can improve employee engagement among current state and local government workers while attracting new hires to public service.

The members of the Maryland Chapter of the ICF are in a unique position to serve government agencies because we are near the U.S. Federal Government's seat and we live in a state with an innovative state government that contains Baltimore's big-city government. We also have active and forward-thinking county governments and rural local governments. The Maryland ICF Chapter members have the potential for a vibrant and valuable government practice for our coaching professionals.

New Brand for ICF

Welcome to 2021! What better way to start the year than by introducing a new brand for the International Coaching Federation?

In January 2020, ICF began our 25th-anniversary celebration by unveiling a new name and an expanded scope. Last week, ICF unveiled a new visual brand to carry us into the next 25 years.

As coaching continues to grow worldwide, ICF will continue to remain relevant and evolve to meet the needs of coaches, coaching clients, our communities and the world. This new brand showcases a bold leap into the future of coaching.

While we may look a bit different, ICF’s vision remains the same: to ensure that coaching is an integral part of a thriving society, where every ICF coach represents the highest quality of professional coaching.

It’s the scale that has changed: ICF has now evolved to become the global organization for coaches and the profession of coaching. We are creating more value for everyone and empowering coaches and their clients around the globe.

To amplify and accelerate the achievement of our vision, ICF has evolved from one single organization to a federation of six family organizations living as one ICF system, each with its own dedicated focus, board and resources:

Last Quarter of 2020 at a Glance

2020 10-Year Anniversary Event a Huge Success

Informational, relational, and transforming is the message that rang out as more than 90 people participated in the ICF MD 10-Year Anniversary celebration last November. The event inspired our members and provided a much-needed highlight during a year of challenges, uncertainty, physical distancing, and enormous changes.

The anniversary celebration provided participants a variety of experiences including:

  • Virtual networking
  • Slide show captioning historical memories
  • Welcome from Madga Mouk, Executive Director and CEO of ICF Global
  • Keynote: "Lessons from the Pub" by Irvine Nugent former ICF MD President and Storyteller
  • Panel of five Founding Officers taking a walk down memory lane
  • Recognition and Awards for chapter leaders
  • Annual chapter meeting and presentation of 2021 Board of Director slate
  • Recognition and presentation of $1000 check to Turn Around Tuesday
  • Future Self visualization facilitated by Rodney Smothers
  • Celebratory toasts

The event was a success. One participant stated the event "renewed her spirit" and another participant shared that "the event captured the warmth, connection, and community of the chapter."

October 28th Virtual Social: Conversations with Seasoned Coaches

As coaches and entrepreneurs, it can feel isolating working on our own sometimes, especially in these days of Covid 19. On October 28th, 2020, ICF MD hosted a virtual social for coaches to come together for an evening of connection, support, and fun. Our group of six seasoned coaches offered their insights and expertise around the topics of marketing, business development, best practices, and engaging new clients.

Here are a few of the ideas that came from our discussion:

  • Research shows few people JUST coach. Most also consult, teach, write or facilitate so consider other opportunities to offer services beyond coaching.
  • Offer a free coaching session to anyone who is interested. Once they experience coaching, it is likely they will want more.
  • Develop a purpose statement. Be clear on both what you are offering and what you're NOT interested in doing.
  • Networking is key to engaging new clients. Connecting on LinkedIn is a good way to start relationships and post articles that demonstrate your brand.
  • It's all about the relationship...the people who already know you are most likely to hire you and recommend you to someone else.
  • It can be hard to build a practice one session and one client at a time so consider offering packages.

Connecting with other coaches and sharing ideas on how to grow our businesses is one of the greatest benefits of being an ICF Maryland member. We look forward to offering more opportunities for coaches to network and learn together in 2021.
